I Used to Think a 600W COB Light Was Just a 600W COB Light. Then I Had to Reject an Entire Batch.

My Position: Transparency in Specifications Is More Valuable Than Brand Prestige

For my money (and for our clients' budgets), a brand that lists real-world, toleranced, and low-level performance data upfront is more trustworthy than one that advertises the highest lumen count but hides the limitations.


Why This Matters: Three Arguments for 'Spec Transparency'

1. The Hidden Cost of 'Minimum Certified' Specs

Take color accuracy. Many budget fixtures claim a CRI of 95 or 96. That's why, when I'm specifying lights for a production package, I now start with the spec sheet. Does the brand list the specific TLCI value per color temperature? Do they mention IP rating and the testing protocol? Do they tell you what accessories are required to achieve the advertised output? The brands that do—like Aputure—get my attention, even if their initial number seems higher.

Final Verdict

I don't think Aputure is perfect. Their spotlights are expensive, and some mounting compatibility issues with third-party gear can be a headache. But their transparency on specs makes them my default recommendation for any project where the quality of light actually matters. And in our industry, that's nearly all of them.
