If you're buying your first real LED for film or photo work, buy the amaran COB 200x S. It's the fixture I've signed off on more than any other in six years of gear purchasing. And if you're building a rental fleet, or shooting in weather, or you already know you need a 20-foot throw, it's the wrong light — I'd tell you that before I let you spend the money.
That's the whole argument. Everything below is me defending it.
Who am I to say this
I'm the operations administrator at a 40-person production company. I'm not a gaffer and I don't pretend to be. I handle purchasing — roughly $180,000 a year across 12 vendors, everything from gaff tape to a used box truck. I report to both the ops director and finance, which means I'm the person who has to explain the invoice nine months later.
I took over purchasing in 2019. That's 60–80 orders a year, maybe 30 of them lighting. Not a huge sample. But it's a real one, and it's the only one I have.
First: a warning about the word "spotlight"
Half the people who land on an article like this typed "spotlight" and meant something else entirely. Worth clearing up early.
- A Jabsco spotlight is a marine searchlight. It mounts on a boat deck. Good product, wrong universe.
- A grow light is horticulture. Same physics, different spectrum, and it runs 12+ hours a day.
- Spotlight on Bumble is a paid boost on a dating app.
If you came here for any of those three, this piece will waste your time, and I'd rather say that in the first 250 words than at the end. This is about LED fixtures for film, photography and video.
The electricity math in the third section does apply to grow lights, though. So not a total loss.
Argument one: the 200x S is the boring, correct default
The amaran COB 200x S bi-color LED monolight is a 200W point-source fixture with a 2700–6500K range and a Bowens mount. It's not exciting. It's not the cheapest thing on the shelf and it's not the most powerful. It is, however, the light that actually leaves our equipment room.
Here's the thing: when you buy a light for a small shop, you're not buying output. You're buying the number of times it gets used.
A 200W COB is light enough that one person can carry it, a stand and a softbox in one trip. That matters more than any spec sheet line, because the light that's annoying to set up doesn't get set up. Ours gets used as a key through diffusion, as a fill bounced into a corner, and as a hair light without anyone complaining about it.
On color: the rated CRI and TLCI figures for this class of fixture sit in the mid-90s, and honestly, those numbers tell you less than people think. What matters more is consistency between units. For reference, the industry tolerance for brand-critical color is Delta E under 2, with Delta E of 2–4 noticeable to trained observers and above 4 visible to most people (Pantone Color Matching System guidelines). Spec sheets describe one unit. You're buying a population.
The Bowens mount is the other quiet argument. It opens up a very large ecosystem of modifiers, reflectors and softboxes. Just don't treat that as unlimited — check the weight and depth limits on anything you hang off the front, especially deep or heavy modifiers, because the mount and the stand are doing different jobs and only one of them was designed with your safety in mind.
Argument two: the light nobody argues about
This is the counterintuitive one, so stick with me.
The Aputure Light Storm COB 120d is daylight-balanced, around 135W, and has no bi-color wheel. Buyers skip it because bi-color sounds like more for the money. I went back and forth between the 120d and the 200x S for about three weeks.
Then I looked at our own footage logs. Most of what we shoot gets dialed to 5600K or 3200K — not 4300K, not the middle of the range. Bi-color is insurance, and insurance is worth paying for when you genuinely don't know what you'll be shooting next month. If you do know — if you're matching daylight in a controlled room every day — the 120d is a simpler fixture that draws less power and asks less of you.
So the honest split is this: buy the 200x S if your schedule is unpredictable. Buy the 120d if it isn't, and put the difference into a modifier you'll actually use.
Both are the right answer. They're just right for different shops.
Argument three: the money nobody counts
People search "how much does a grow light cost to run" constantly, and the answer is the same formula for every fixture ever made: watts divided by 1,000, times hours per day, times days per year, times your electricity rate.
(watts ÷ 1000) × hours/day × days/year × $/kWh = annual cost
Run it on the 200x S at full power, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, on our commercial rate of about $0.13/kWh: 0.2 × 8 × 260 × 0.13 comes out to roughly $54 a year. That's it. Less than the sandbags.
The same math on an old 2kW tungsten fresnel at the same hours: about 4,160 kWh, so roughly $540 a year — plus the air conditioning you're now paying for, which isn't in that number.
A 200W horticultural LED running 12 hours a day, 365 days a year, draws 876 kWh. At a residential rate around $0.17/kWh, call it $149 a year. Different industry, identical arithmetic. Grow lights cost more to run mostly because they run three times as many hours, not because the physics is different.
Our rate was $0.11 two years ago — no, $0.13. I'm mixing it up with the warehouse lease. Either way, pull your own number off your bill; utility rates vary enough that mine is useless to you. The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes monthly average commercial and residential rates by state if you want a defensible figure.
Where I got this wrong
In 2022 we standardized the studio on bi-color fixtures. I assumed "bi-color" plus "5600K" meant matched units, across every product family we owned. Didn't verify. Turned out there were visible differences between fixtures from different product generations once they were side by side on camera.
To be fair to the gear: this is an LED problem, not a brand problem. Two units from any manufacturer can diverge, and spec sheets describe a single unit, not a production run. But I'm the one who bought eleven of them before testing two, so I own it. We spent around $2,000 in extra colorist hours finding a grade that worked, give or take a few hundred.
Lesson: buy one. Test it on your camera, next to the fixtures you already own. Then buy the second one.
What people push back on
"Buy once, cry once — get a 600d."
Sometimes. If you're pushing through an 8×8 frame of diffusion or you need punch at 20 feet, a 200W fixture will let you down and you'll know it on day one. But a 600-class fixture is a different logistical animal: heavier stands, more sandbags, more floor space, and once you're stacking two or three big heads plus everything else, the circuit math stops being trivial. Own the output you use weekly. Rent the output you use twice a year.
"Just rent everything."
Rental makes sense for fixtures you use under about ten days a year. A 200W-class monolight rents for roughly $35–60 a day in most markets. Twenty days a year and you've paid for the fixture and given it back. Own the boring lights. Rent the specialty ones.
"Go RGB for everything."
I like RGBWW for accents, practicals and background color. For a key light, you're paying for color range you won't use and getting less output per dollar than a plain bi-color. Buy one small RGB unit, learn it, then decide.
When I'd tell you not to buy either
- You shoot in rain, dust or salt spray. Standard COB fixtures aren't weather-sealed. You'll be bagging them and hating life. Look at IP-rated fixtures instead.
- You need a real long throw. A bare COB with a reflector is not a spotlight in the beam sense. That's a lensed fixture, and it's a different purchase.
- You can't carry a stand and a sandbag. Then no point-source light fixes that. Start smaller.
- You actually need a marine searchlight. Buy the Jabsco. I mean it.
Where I land
Buy the 200x S. Buy one. Test it for a week. Then buy the second one, or don't.
Most people asking "which light should I buy" are really asking "which light will I regret least." For the majority of small studios, that's a 200W bi-color COB with a mount that already has a modifier ecosystem behind it. For rental fleets, weather work and long throws, it isn't — and you'll know which of those you are within about ten seconds of reading the sentence.
Everything else is somebody else's workflow.
