The Call You Don't Want on a Thursday
The call came at 6:12 p.m. on a Thursday in March 2024. Thirty-six hours before a Saturday 6 a.m. call time, the production coordinator was making a sound that was half apology, half siren. Their lighting package had gone to the wrong airport. The only thing between them and a $70,000 reshoot was the phrase, 'Can you help us?'
I've been the person who answers that question since 2017. My title at the rental house is warehouse operations lead, but my actual job is triage. In seven years, I've handled a ton of rush orders for commercials, music videos, documentaries, and one corporate event where the client's own gaffer got stuck in another city. The first thing I ask is how much time we have. The second is whether the order is physically possible. The third is what happens if the worst-case thing goes wrong.
The Aputure 300D Wattage Question
This time the DP got on the phone before I could ask about deliverables. 'We need two key lights that match a window in the background. Can you get Aputure fixtures? And tell me if the Aputure 300D wattage is really 300 watts, because this building's electrical panel looks like a museum piece.'
I love that question. The 300D is a reliable workhorse, but the fixture's input power is a bit higher than the name suggests. I pulled the spec sheet from the shelf and gave him the number—or rather, I gave him the number that was on our own rental unit's plug label. Then I added: verify the current firmware manual before you trust my memory. On a 20-amp circuit, two 300Ds will fit if you don't load the same circuit with other gear. On a 15-amp circuit, you have one key light and a little bit of margin. That's the difference between a good plan and a fire story.
While I built the package, I grabbed an Aputure amaran LED light for the practical closeups. I keep a few amaran 200x units on the shelf because they're small enough to hide and dim enough for a tight shot. For a long time I used the 100x for this job—no, wait, the 100x is the tiny one. The 200x is the compact one with more output. That's the one I sent.
Then Came the IR Spotlight and the Plant
Right before he hung up, the DP said, 'Do you have an IR spotlight? We added a night-vision insert.' I do. We keep one for a client who shoots with modified cameras. I wrote down 'IR spotlight' and asked if they needed a filter. He said no, they just needed a beam of invisible light that would let the camera see a dark room.
The room in question was the same set where a dying plant sat under a bubble chandelier.
That's when he asked the question I didn't expect: 'Can a plant grow without light? The set decorator wants to know if we can blame the bubble chandelier or if she should switch to a fake plant.'
Short answer: no. A plant can sit in darkness without dying immediately, but it cannot grow without usable light. The usable light for photosynthesis is in the PAR range, about 400 to 700 nanometers. The IR spotlight might be light, but a plant treats it the way a human treats a pizza box without pizza: not food.
A bubble chandelier is a practical fixture designed to look nice on camera, not to feed a living plant. Even if it's glowing at full output, the amount of PAR hitting the plant below is probably a rounding error. The plant under it is starving. It might look okay for a couple of days, but then it'll start reaching toward the windows and you'll notice. If the scene runs more than a day, use a fake plant or bring a dedicated LED grow light that no one will see.
The assumption is that 'light' means useful light. The reality is that photosynthesis is wavelength-specific. An IR spotlight is invisible to the eye and nearly useless to a plant. Interestingly, the plant question is one of those legacy myths that has evolved. People still say 'plants need sunlight' as if indoor LED light is somehow fake. That thinking comes from an era when indoor lights were weak, hot, and heavy on the wavelengths plants ignore. Today, a high-CRI LED panel can absolutely grow a houseplant if it's close enough and bright enough. But a decorative bubble chandelier is not that.
Later, I looked up the phrase 'can a plant grow without light' out of curiosity. It's amazing how many products claim to be grow lights when their spectrum says otherwise. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), product claims have to be truthful and substantiated. I suspect some of those 'IR grow light' listings would not survive a challenge. Anyway, that's a separate battle.
The Delivery
The package arrived at 10:40 the next morning by a local courier who does more for my sanity than any logistics software ever will. The cases were stacked on set by 11. The DP ran one 300D through a 4x4 diffusion frame as the key, used the second one with a grid cloth to hold the background, and put the amaran 200x on a small C-stand as an eye light. The IR spotlight sat pointed at a doorway for the night-vision insert. The bubble chandelier glowed in the background at 10% and did exactly what it was supposed to do: look like a bubble chandelier.
After the truck left, I spent an hour second-guessing the circuit math. The building's panel was old, but the call had forced me to verify the actual Aputure 300D wattage on paper instead of just trusting the fixture's name. The label said 350W max input. I'd told the DP that and he planned around it. It worked. The lesson is not 'the 300D is 350W'—the lesson is to read the label, measure the circuit, and leave a margin.
What I'd Tell a Friend
Bottom line? The gear has changed, and the industry is still evolving. Ten years ago, this order would have been two 1K tungsten Fresnels and a full C-stand grid. Those are good lights, but they're hot, heavy, and power-hungry. Today, LED fixtures like the Aputure 300D and the amaran line do the same job with less current, less heat, and more control. The fundamentals haven't changed—you still need to know your power draw, your beam, and your light quality. But the execution has transformed. A small commercial can now carry a broadcast-quality lighting package in a station wagon.
As for the plant: no, it can't grow without light. It can survive a few days and pretend to be fine, but it needs photons in the PAR range. Not an IR spotlight, not a bubble chandelier, not a 300W LED that's too far away to help. If the set decorator ever calls again, I'll send the same answer: get a fake plant, or give the real one a window—and a small LED grow bulb that's been tested, not just marketed.
