Know what you are actually buying

The Aputure 300X is a proper production fixture. The Aputure amaran COB 200x S is a smaller, lighter, more accessible fixture. They are not competitors in my mind; they are different tools. But they share the same family DNA, and that is exactly why people confuse their capabilities.

According to Aputure's published product specs (aputure.com, as of January 2025), the 300X is a 300W-class bi-color COB LED, and the 200x S is a 200W-class compact COB fixture. Both are legitimate tools. The specs are the beginning, not the promise. Verify current specs before renting; output details can change.

The search detour: Arlo spotlight and dark sky compliance

If you are setting up a production light outdoors, dark sky compliance may not be on your radar. But it should be if you are shooting near a residential area or an observatory. An Aputure 1200D with a naked COB can create serious uplight. Adding a barn door, a flag, or a solid modifier helps control the spill. That is not a compliance certification, but it is better than pointing light at the sky.

The checklist I use now

Now the solution. It is short because it should be.

Before any lighting order, we check three things:

  1. The required exposure at the subject distance, not the advertised wattage.
  2. The modifier and beam angle that will create the intended look.
  3. The power draw and location restrictions, including any outdoor lighting rules.

That checklist has caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months. It does not make the gear less confusing. It makes the decisions less random.
